He knew the old man's elbow was too hurt to lift him any longer for the kids to see his true size. When he arrived in the barn on show mornings, the hare noticed, the old man used his left arm now to do everything: scoop the feed into the plastic bucket for the way home, swing the barn door open and closed, hoist the hare into the van. But the hare existed for the moment when the old man lifted him up and the kids screamed and broke into applause and even the teachers gasped and murmured among themselves. At one show the old man had left him on the table and let the kids guess at his size and the hare had not eaten on the way home in the van nor the next day, and he had scratched a bare patch into his fur behind his collar with annoyance. The old man had guessed the problem quicker than the hare had expected. The next show he had lifted him higher than he'd done in months. Over the wild song of admiration from the kids and teachers, the hare could hear the old man grunt tightly with pain.
